Ecotourism is about more than simply visiting natural attractions or natural places. Ecotourism is defined as responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment, sustains and provides economic benefits for local people, and communities, in addition to informing and educating tourists.
To this date Jamaica is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Caribbean region. Tourism makes up over 50% of the gross economy on the Island of Jamaica. That same industry also disproportionately affects Jamaican citizens living and working on the island. Unfortunately, poverty is prevalent on the island, as over 30% of the entire documented population live below the poverty line, and a significantly larger percent lack basic necessities such as electricity and WIFI. One of the main issues is that jobs are scarce on the island, and the jobs that don't exploit citizens are even more rare.
